John Minick has been selected as the 2025 Tigard Shining Stars “From the Heart” Volunteer of the Year, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the betterment of the Tigard community.
Named in honor of Jim Hartman who set the standard for this award by his example of giving from the heart to his community, and the “From the Heart” award honors a person who has dedicated their time and energy to a specific cause in the Tigard community. This person gives willingly, energetically and consistently; they might be well known or might be a “quiet” volunteer, who always gives “from the heart”!
John Minick’s unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Tigard residents has made a lasting impact on the community. John’s involvement in various local initiatives, including organizing community clean-up events and supporting local outreach programs, showcases his dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all. His efforts have not only addressed immediate community needs but have also laid the groundwork for sustainable positive change. His efforts have been steady through all seasons and all types of weather. In three years, John has removed hundreds of pounds of trash throughout the Tigard area. Without John the Fanno Creek Trail and surrounding areas would be full of toxic and unsightly debris such as cigarette butts, gum, plastic bags (many containing animal waste), used needles, and recyclable materials.
When John was told he was nominated for this award he said “Thank you, my hope is that this will inspire more people to get involved in restoring the beauty of our wonderful state”. Community member Amanda Feller said “John is the ideal person to earn this award. Cleaning up the waste humans leave on our beautiful natural spaces is without question a self-inspired activity”.
